When can a Greyhound finish fifth in a race and win a stake championship?
Well Monday afternoon at Palm Beach Kennel Club, Marsella Racing Kennel’s Kiowa Bonita Bet did just that, accumulating enough points to earn the title 2009 Bud Light Iron-Dog Triathlon Champion.
In the Iron-Dog Triathlon, the track’s most talented and versatile greyhounds raced at three different distances, the 738-yard Dixie Course, the 660-yard 3/8ths Mile Course and the 545-yard Royal Palm Course, all over a ten-day period. Points were assigned to each greyhound depending on their order of finish at each distance. The greyhound with the highest point total following the third and final round earned Iron-Dog championship status.
Kiowa Bonita Bet finished second and first in rounds one and two, respectively, and entered round three with 25 points. Monday afternoon’s fifth-place finish added three more points to her tally, for a total of 28, three more than Iron-Dog runner-up - and winner of the final round - Mountain Greyhound Kennel’s Dalcash Helen.
