Table 27 in the Poker Room at Palm Beach Kennel Club was the place to be at 6:18pm Saturday evening, January 21, 2017. Seven excited players took a piece of the $231,190 Bad Beat jackpot, and the lucky “losing” poker hand paid off a New Year holiday present of $115,593.
PBKC’s rules state that if a player who has at least four 10s loses, to a better hand, that loser gets half the Bad Beat jackpot. The winner of the hand gets 25 percent, and those sitting at the table split the remaining 25 percent. The “losing” hand received $115,593; the actual winning hand collected $57,797 and the other five players took home $11,560 just for playing at the winning table.
Matt Fagan dealt the hand in 2-4 Limit Hold’em, a poker game where each player holds two cards of their own and share five community cards. The “loser” of the hand, Mohammed Khatib of Vero Beach, Fl., held 56789 of hearts, while the “winner” Susan Barnhart of Rochester, NY, had 789TJ hearts.
“I could hear a huge whoop coming from the Poker Room”, said Assistant Manager Josh Alderson. “Everyone was applauding and congratulating the winners, some of which were near tears. It was more emotional than most Bad Beat wins”.
Palm Beach Kennel Club’s Poker Room is home of the record-breaking south Florida Bad Beat Jackpot of $504,833 (paid out 9/23/12).
