ROUND ONE QUALIFYING FOR PALM BEACH KENNEL CLUB’S $50,000 JAMES W. PAUL DERBY WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, FEBRUARY 7!
West Palm Beach, Fl. – Round one qualifying action for Palm Beach Kennel Club’s $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Derby gets underway Wednesday afternoon, February 7.
Forty Greyhounds will go to post in five qualifying races which will be contested on the 660-yard Pat C Rendezvous Three-Eighths Mile Course.
All 40 Greyhounds will return for round two on Saturday afternoon, February 10, and then again for round three on Wednesday afternoon, February 14. The top 16-point earners from the third round will compete in the Derby semifinals Sunday afternoon, February 18.
The $50,000 James Paul Derby Championship Final will be contested Saturday afternoon, February 24.
At the beginning of a major stakes event, it is usual protocol to predict “Who is the one to beat”. Most times, there are a plethora of answers and theories, but in this year’s running of the Derby, it looks to be a wide-open affair.
Since we don’t have the likes of Janice Dean, Fraulein Morgan or Ethel Is Here, it may take a couple of rounds of qualifying to determine if there will be a prohibitive favorite going into the semifinals.
Qualifying events will be held in races eight, ten, twelve, fourteen and fifteen.
Post time for Wednesday afternoon’s first race is 1:00 p.m.
This will be the 87th running of the Derby, one of the nation’s longest running stake events, and is named in honor of humanitarian, greyhound owner and dedicated supporter of Greyhound adoption James W. Paul.
