ROUND ONE QUALIFYING FOR PALM BEACH KENNEL CLUB’S $50,000 JAMES W. PAUL 3/8THS DERBY WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, FEBRUARY 12!

West Palm Beach, Fl. – Round one qualifying action for Palm Beach Kennel Club’s $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Derby gets underway Wednesday afternoon, February 12.

Thirty-two Greyhounds will go to post in four qualifying races which will be contested on the 660-yard Pat C Rendezvous Three-Eighths Mile Course.

All 32 Greyhounds will return for round two on Saturday afternoon, February 15, and round three Wednesday afternoon, February 19.

Following the third round, the top 16-point earners will advance to the semifinals, Sunday afternoon, February 23.

The $50,000 James Paul Derby Championship Final will be contested Saturday afternoon, February 29.

Unlike previous iterations of the $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Derby, there really isn’t what one would call an early favorite to win it all. But of course, one or two could emerge after a couple of rounds of qualifying.

A quick rundown of Wednesday afternoon’s qualifiers:

Race 10: The most likely post-time favorite is #5 Slatex Berreta (Flying Fired Up – Slatex Albany, Janie Carroll Kennel. Others who drew good positions include the ultra-strong closer #1 GV’s Jessie’s Girl (Barcelona Boss – GV Jewel Quest, James Douglas), early speedster #3 O Ya Praire Wind (Oya Stan The Man – O Ya Chewie, Lester Raines) and the veteran #8 Save The Date (Pat C Clement – Keen Katy, Arthur Agganis).

Race 12: With so many slow breakers, the post-time favorite appears to be the box-busting #6 B’s Cappuccino (SH Avatar – Oaks Mocha, Janie Carroll). After that, this race is up for grabs.

Race 15: This event features who many believe is the pre-championship favorite, #6 JD Android (JD Titanium – Allisonracinteam, Brindle). And for good reason! Android will be going for her fifth-consecutive victory and in her last event, clocked in at the second-fastest time on the 660-Yard Pat C Rendezvous Couse in track history, an unbelievable 37.16 seconds.

A round-one qualifier will also be held in Race 14.

Post time for Wednesday afternoon’s first race is 1:00 p.m.

This will be the 89th and final running of the Derby, one of the nation’s longest running stake events, and is named in honor of humanitarian, greyhound owner and dedicated supporter of Greyhound adoption James W. Paul.
