ROUND TWO QUALIFYING FOR PALM BEACH KENNEL CLUB’S $50,000 JAMES W. PAUL DERBY, SATURDAY AFTERNOON, FEBRUARY 10!
West Palm Beach, Fl. – Second-round qualifying action for Palm Beach Kennel Club’s $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Derby takes place Saturday afternoon, February 10.
All 40 of the Greyhounds from round one will compete Saturday afternoon in five qualifying events, and then again in round three on Wednesday afternoon, February 14. The top 16-point earners following the third round will move on to the sweet sixteen being contested Sunday afternoon, February 18. The final eight will then compete in the championship final, Saturday afternoon, February 24.
A quick rundown of Saturday afternoon’s qualifiers:
No first-round winners in Race 8, but there is no doubt that the post-time favorite will be the consistent #8 TC Charlie (KC And All – Oshkosh First, James Douglas Kennel). Challenging Charlie will be the early speedster #2 TWPA Hope (Loxahatchee Dash – Takebackyourmink, Rader Racing) and the well-positioned #1 JS Sweet Revenge (Pat C Clement – JS Victorious, Koppe, Staats & Collins).
Moving onto Race 10, we have first-round victor #7 Rcknative Spirit (Pat C Clement – RCK Spirit, Suncoast Kennel). Possible spoilers include the strong closer #2 Char Henschen (Djays Octane – Hail Storm Bones, James Douglas) and the early speed-rushing duo of #3 SE’s Trophy Girl (Red Ranger – Trophy Snatcher, Rader Racing) and #4 Atascocita Carey (Flying Westover – Atascocita Doris, Lester Raines).
Race 12 features two round-one victors, #1 JS Mane Event (KC And All – TY Kay Event, Rader Racing) and #2 Popgun Episode (Bob’s Skeet – Kpop Episode, B & B Racing). Possible challengers could come in the sleek physiques of early-speedsters #4 Rail Defender (Stealintheshow – Shot At The Nite, Janie Carroll) and #5 Oshkosh Marlene (BD’s Grayson – Flying Appletara, James Douglas).
Race 14 features first-round winner, the impressive #5 Barts Big Bang (Pat C Clement – Barts Magpie, James Douglas). Big Bang impressed everyone in the first round, going wire-to-wire and winning by more than six lengths in the best qualifying time of the afternoon, 37.87 seconds. His main challenge looks to come from the well-posted #1 SE’s Magic Photo (Dutch Magic – AJ’s Aunt Dottie, Rader Racing) and #8 Busan (SH Avatar – Party Hardy, Brindle Kennel).
The final qualifier of the afternoon in Race 15 features round-one victor #4 PJ Whatthewant (Djays Octane – Whats Next, Rader Racing). If this nice-looking pup bombs the starting box like she did last time, then she has a great shot at entering round three undefeated.
Post time for Saturday afternoon’s first race is 1:00 p.m.
This will be the 87th running of the Derby, one of the nation’s longest running stake events, and is named in honor of humanitarian, greyhound owner and dedicated supporter of Greyhound adoption James W. Paul.
